In-SPUR-ation: Celebrating 70 Years of Sisterhood with the Spurs and Setons: 1990-1999

Seatons, 1990s

Highlighs of the 1990s

  • The Charity Ball of 1991 raised $2000 for the Ronald McDonald House.
  • The Setons of 1992 – 1993 worked weekly with the disadvantaged children at the Dominican Transitional Learning Center and also wore Nickelodeon costumes at the North Town Mall to pose with children to raise money for the March of Dimes.
  • At the beginning of the 1993 – 1994 academic year, the Setons received some negative comments regarding their color of striped shirts.  The Setons were quick to point out that although they were not wearing traditional shirts, they were keeping with the tradition of service.
  • Fighting against the reputation of simply being “muffin pushers”, the 1995 -1996 Setons sought to educate the GU community of their service programs such as helping L’Arche, where 15 Setons weekly spent 2 hours organizing events, delivering 80 meals weekly to AIDS sufferers, and helping homeless families through the Salvation Army.
  • The 1997 Charity Ball raised $8,000 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center.  The Setons also helped with graduation, new student orientation, L’Arche, and the Children’s Arc of Spokane.
  • 1998 – 1999 Setons volunteered at Shalom Zone, the AIDS network, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center.  Through weekly muffin sales on Wednesday, they raised $1500 for the Children’s Miracle Network.
