Celebrating Impact: The Research and Scholarship of President Katia Passerini: Articles

The purpose of this editorial is twofold. First, we present a framework to help make sense of how research in gender and entrepreneurship is currently conceptualized and positioned. The framework is based on a review and analysis of the current topics investigated at the intersection of gender and entrepreneurship. We subsequently apply this framework to contextualize the articles in this thematic issue on gender, in addition to offering suggestions for future research.

Does our research influence how entrepreneurs and small business owners think or accomplish their business objectives? Does our research effectively inform policy such that legislation is largely evidence-based? Is our research contributing to solving some of the world’s greatest challenges (for example, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges) at a pace proportionate to society’s collective need for solutions? Many individuals (for example, scholars, grant funding agencies, policy makers, practitioners, editors, authors) worry contemporary entrepreneurship and small business research (and most academic research more broadly) has little impact on practice, does not effectively inform policy, and is not producing output proportionate to the global need for solutions to the world’s biggest problems.

This editorial provides an overview of the inner workings of the Journal of Small Business Management and its editorial and peer review processes. In doing so it offers practical insights relevant to authors looking to publish scholarly work in the fields of entrepreneurship and small business scholarship. Specifically, this article discusses the process JSBM uses to review all submissions, the most common causes for a desk reject decision, guidance on best practices for manuscript submission and publication success, and the importance of engagement with the scholarly community.

A key goal of knowledge management (KM) is to foster innovation through the creation of new knowledge. Surprisingly, there is little research on KM in the context of entrepreneurship, a domain where innovation is considered essential. This paper extends established theories and frameworks for KM to the understudied context of KM in small and medium entrepreneurial firms, particularly young startups.

Twitter, a popular micro-blogging service, is increasingly evolving from being a mere chatting platform to a tool that is instrumental in affecting a desired learning and social change among individuals and organizations. Although using Twitter for learning while socializing represents a significant departure from its intended initial function, information systems (IS) researchers should further explore the impact and implications of social media technologies such as Twitter in the educational context.

This paper discusses information and communication technology-driven options for local and global communities aimed at supporting rapid responses to public health emergencies. Our examples stem from local groups within the U.S. where recent events are spurring a dynamic response to the problem of communication and community roles in emergency scenarios.

Preparing students to work in teams benefits learning experiences and provides a stronger foundation for the challenges of the workplace. Team-based learning (TBL) is an instructional strategy where small groups become closely coupled teams through repeated face-to-face collaboration on various projects and assignments. This paper illustrates how traditional team-based learning can be extended to the online environment.

AMCIS 2006 Tutorial Paper: The evolving role of knowledge in modern societies has spurred an interest in better evaluating knowledge creation capabilities of a variety of business, non-profit, national or multinational actors. Our field has extensively focused on reviewing knowledge management evaluation and implementation programs at the organizational level. In this paper, which stems from a tutorial presented at AMICS 2006 in Acapulco, we focus on the efforts undertaken by International Development Institutions (IDIs) to assess the role of knowledge as a driver of national wealth and economic development.

Mobile communication technologies are changing every aspect of the daily life, bringing new opportunities in many areas. Several converging mobile systems can potentially change organizations significantly by shifting the traditional boundaries of work-life and the workplace. IT departments need to change their systems, upgrade, and adapt their infrastructure and policies to support these mobile services. These changes are both positive and negative. With this progression, some fundamental questions related to privacy, security, and a new concept of work place and work space are raised.
