Foley Library User Services Training Guide

Building Policies

As front-line employees of the library, it is very important for you to be familiar with our building use policies. Please review our Building Use Policy here: https://www.gonzaga.edu/foley-library/about/policies/building-use-policy. You will be quizzed on this policy, so make sure you read it carefully.

All patrons, whether they are GU-affiliated or not, are expected to abide by our Building Use Policy. Those in violation may be asked to leave by library staff or Campus Security. If you notice anything in the library that you feel may be in violation of our Building Use Policy, please let a supervisor know.

Here are a few of our more common building policy violations and some scripts you can learn to help us enforce our building use policies.

Enforcing food policies

As a student employee, we expect you to help us enforce light policy violations (i.e, someone bringing pizza into the building, noise zone violations, etc.). We also expect you to keep an eye out for bigger violations, such as disruptive patrons, but we expect you to refer those issues to us.

Here are some examples of how you might enforce food policy violations:

  • “Hello! I notice you are bringing in boxes of pizzas. We actually don’t allow full meals in the building. Could you please make sure to eat that outside or in the atrium.”
  • “We noticed you were eating fast food in the library, and we actually only allow light snacks. Could you please eat that outside the building or in the atrium?”
  • “I noticed you had Jimmy John’s deliver to you just now, and unfortunately we don’t allow deliveries here in Foley. In the future, please make sure you wait for your delivery outside of the building.”

Enforcing noise zone violations

Here are some examples of how you might enforce noise zone policy violations:

  • “Hi there! We received a complaint about the noise level on this floor so I just wanted to let you know that this floor is quiet conversations only. If you want group study space, you are welcome to move to the main or lower level for that, and we also have study rooms available.”
  • “Hello, sorry to interrupt but this is the silent floor, could you please find another place to study for your group work? You are welcome to make noise on the main floor or lower level. Thank you!”

Unattended Children in the Library

Unattended Children in the Library

This issue comes up more often that you might expect. If you notice unattended children in the library, let a supervisor know as soon as possible.

Unattended children in the library presents a bunch of issues, including but not limited to child welfare and safety.

Here is our official policy:

All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult while in the Foley Center Library. The limited exceptions to this policy are:

  •  Dual enrollment high school students with a valid Gonzaga University I.D.
  •  Current Gonzaga University students under the age of 18 who have a valid Gonzaga University I.D.

All users of the Foley Center Library are subject to the provisions of the library’s Building Use Policy and the Computer Use Policy. Additional Gonzaga University policies may also apply. Access to, or use of, the Internet by minor children is solely the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian.
