Foley Library User Services Training Guide

Calling Security & 9-1-1

Calling 9-1-1

If you ever need to call 9-1-1, note that we have a specific address so that emergency responders can find us. That address is 621 E. Cataldo Ave. You will be quizzed on this address, so commit it to memory.

If you call 9-1-1 from a wired phone in the library, Campus Security will be alerted as well. If you do ever call 9-1-1, please call Campus Security to let them know why you called 9-1-1 so that they are fully aware of the situation.

Security Procedures

Gonzaga University and Foley Library believe in a behavior-based approach to reporting issues to Campus Security. This method helps avoid things like implicit bias and racial profiling in reporting issues.

As part of your onboarding training, you will be trained on behavior-based reporting when contacting Campus Security. The following information is in complement to that training, but is by no means the complete training.

Problem Patrons

Very rarely, you may have to deal with patron behavioral or emergency issues during the late-night hours. Some examples include:

- Patron seems drunk and is singing loudly in the library.

- Patron is sliding down the stair railing

- Patron is directing abusive comments toward a patron or student employee

If and when you need to escalate a situation to Campus Security, be sure to focus on behavior, and remember three words (eyes, mouth, hands & feet). When reporting to Campus Security, focus on describing the behavior in these terms (i.e., what are their hands doing? what is their mouth saying? what are their eyes doing?).

Focusing on behavior-based reporting helps to avoid things like implicit bias and racial discrimination.

Calling Campus Security

All student employees are empowered to call 9-1-1 and/or Campus Security at their discretion. If you ever need to call Campus Security, you can do so from any wired library phone by dialing x 2222. You can also program their number into your mobile phone by adding 509-313-2222.

If you call Campus Security from a wired phone in the library, they will be able to see your exact location.

If you are in a situation where you are concerned about being overheard while calling Campus Security, you can dial the number on the circ desk phone and set the phone handset down on the circulation desk. The Campus Security dispatcher will be able to listen in to what is happening and to see the situation through the security camera, and will dispatch a response.

Campus Escorts

Especially during the late-night hours, Campus Security provides escorts to homes (on or near campus) or vehicles for student employees and/or student library patrons. Please note that this is subject to availability of the officers at the time of the call.

If you are working at the desk and a patron requests an escort from Campus Security, please give them a call on behalf of the patron. Know that you will be expected to provide the student's name and pick up location to Campus Security dispatch.
