Foley Library User Services Training Guide

Emergency Procedures

The following information is by no means exhaustive. All Lead Grads are required to attend Emergency training with Campus Security, which provides comprehensive emergency training. The below is supplemental only.

Where to find the Emergency Procedures

Emergency Procedures are posted inside the student coat room (book drop room), and inside the supply cupboard doors.

First Aid Kits & AED Machine

There is a first aid kit in the student coat room. There is also one in the Circulation work room (room 103).

The AED machine is located next to the main floor elevator.

All front line workers of Foley Library are encouraged to provide first aid if you are trained to do so. Please do not get in the way of emergency responders or attempt to move anyone who has been injured.

Responding to a Patron Injury or Illness

If a patron is injured, unconscious, or ill to the point of needing emergency aid, you should delegate the following:

- Someone to call 9-1-1

- Someone to call Campus Security

- Someone to grab the first aid kit

- Someone to clear people from crowding around the patron

- Someone to meet emergency responders at the door

Do not move an injured patron! If they are on the ground, ask them to stay still until emergency responders arrive.

Delegating the above tasks can help with bystanders who may otherwise get in the way or make the situation more complicated. If a bystander is interfering with your ability to take care of a situation, giving them a specific task can help. You may also need to tell bystanders to back off, give the patron room, and let emergency services handle the situation.

Fire Extinguishers

There are fire extinguishers throughout the building. The closest one to Circulation is next to the elevator. As you walk the building, keep an eye out for where the fire extinguishers live on each floor.

Fire Exits

There are fire exits at both sides of each floor, and there is also one in the middle of the second floor (next to the Academic Testing Center).

Fire Alarm

In the event of a fire alarm, you are not required to clear the building. You are required to leave the building and make sure everyone on shift is accounted for. Evacuate to the north side of the Foley Lawn. Do not attempt to re-enter the building until you get an all clear from Campus Security or emergency responders.

Shelter in Place

In the event of a shelter in place, go to the lowest and innermost point in the building (lower level).

Active Shooter - Run, Hide, Fight

In the event of an active shooter, you can decide to run, hide, or fight.

If you decide to hide, you can shelter in the circulation work room. The door remains locked at all times, so pulling that door closed will lock it from the outside. Turn the lights off and shelter in the space until you receive the all-clear from an emergency responder.
