First Steps When Arriving
At the beginning of each shift, you should check the daily schedule (posted at the Circ Desk). It is important to check your schedule, as we may have rearranged your shift since you last changed WhenToWork. When you check the schedule, you also need to initial the schedule and note your arrival time next to your name. This will develop accountability with your supervisors and yourself around timeliness.
When you arrive at work, you should store your belongings in the Circulation student employee coatroom, just to the left of the swinging red door. Important note about the coatroom door: it is important to keep this door closed at all times. Since the book drop is located in the coat room, it is not well-insulated. This means that whatever is happening outside (cold or hot weather, wildfire smoke, etc.) will seep into the circulation area if that door is not kept closed. It also means that items that are stored in that area are not secure, including your personal belongings. Lastly, it looks unprofessional, so please help to keep that door closed.
We have a strict policy of no headphones or large technology at the desk for several reasons. The most important reason is that it makes you seem unapproachable to people who might have questions. It also distracts you from performing job duties at the desk. Lastly, it creates bad optics for our users and building staff in that it makes it appear that you have nothing to do, which may translate to us receiving fewer student employee positions in the future.
All that being said, we understand the need to have your phone near you for emergency situations. Please be mindful of your phone use at the desk, and If we notice you using your phone too much, we may ask you to keep it in the coatroom. Items like tablets or iPads should be used only laid flat on the desk and not standing up, as that creates a visual barrier for patrons. Our technology policy is subject to change if employee use of personal technology becomes a barrier to patron service.
Be sure to grab a yellow lanyard and make sure you are wearing it at all times during your shifts (the red lanyards are for our lead students).
Our dress code is fairly casual, but we do ask that you present yourself professionally. When choosing what you wear to work, please consider how you will be representing the library during your shift, and keep in mind that you will be interacting with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Some examples of what is acceptable to wear: business attire, jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses, flannels, yoga pants, t-shirts. Please do NOT wear pajamas or sports uniforms, or clothing with offensive language or political religious messaging.
