Building Use Policy
We have already covered this a few times during your trainings, but we want to make sure you know to refer to the Building Use Policy if you are ever in doubt about any library policies. All patrons (community, student, faculty, staff) are expected to abide by the Building Use Policy.
Occasionally, the library encounters what might be described as a difficult patron. These patrons are violating our Building Use Policy in various ways (causing a disturbance, yelling at library patrons or staff, using inappropriate language with a library patron or staff member). If you are ever working at the desk, follow this triage model for reporting the behavior.
Notify A Supervisor
If a supervisor is available or in the immediate area, notify them. If they are available via Zoom chat, send them a chat. Remember that your supervisors might also include ILL staff as well as the Associate Dean.
Sending A Zoom Chat
If a supervisor is unavailable, send a message to the Reference & Research Triage chat letting everyone on that channel know the situation, and ask if anyone can come assist.
Calling Campus Security
If a supervisor is not available and you have tried the Zoom channel, or if the situation is too urgent to try either of those routes first, we want you to feel empowered to call Campus Security and/or 9-1-1 as necessary. Please be prepared to give our physical address (which is located near any phone, and is 621 E. Cataldo).
If you call campus security, we will ask you to also fill out an incident report. There is more information about incident reports on our Personal Boundaries page.
Behavior Based Reporting
You may remember your training on behavior-based reporting from previous trainings with Campus Security. Please review this video so that you feel confident if your ability to report using this method if you ever need to contact Campus Security.
