Your Rights as a Worker

Breaks

As a worker at any place of employment, you are entitled to one 10-15 minute rest break for every 4-hours worked, ideally toward the midpoint of each four-hour period. If you are working 4 or more hours in a row, please make sure that you are tracking your own breaks and let a supervisor know when you would like to take that break. Breaks may not be taken at the end of the shift.

If you are working more than 5 hours, you need to clock out for an unpaid meal break. The break must occur at least 2 hours into your shift and no later than 5 hours after the beginning of the shift.

Rest breaks may not be combined with unpaid meal breaks, or to cover a late arrival or early departure.

Safe Working Conditions

If you notice any unsafe working conditions, please notify a supervisor and/or Gonzaga’s Risk Management department. If you are injured while working on the job, this must be reported to Human Resources and Risk Management. Keep a supervisor notified of any work injuries.

Work and Your Health and Safety

If you have a temporary condition while working at Foley (i.e., you have a broken arm or back injury and shelving books triggers pain for you), please let a supervisor know, as we can easily assign you to other tasks. Formal workplace accommodations must be approved by Human Resources. Check in with a supervisor for more information.

Employment Verification and References

When you are no longer employed at the library and are seeking employment elsewhere, all employment verification requests must be routed to Gonzaga's HR Department.

Library supervisors will consider reference requests only with advance notice. To comply with FERPA and institutional regulations, formal written requests must be submitted in advance of listing any library supervisors as references. Please see a supervisor for more information.
