Systematic Reviews & Expert Reviews

Data Extraction

Data abstraction is the process of collecting information from each study in your review. You will be creating evidence tables that summarize key points of each study. Some systematic review software can help with this process (such as Covidence), but you can also use a spreadsheet to manually build your evidence tables. The data that you collect is dependent upon your research question.

A few examples of data fields for an evidence table may include:

  • Article citation information (year of publication, title, authors, DOI)
  • Patient demographics
  • Study type, quality, or level of evidence
  • Intervention details
  • Outcomes
