Open Eduational Resources (OER)

This guide provides information about finding and using Open Educational Resources, or OER.

Teach with OER

OER can have an even bigger impact on students when faculty move beyond adopting OER and use them to create new learning opportunities that are otherwise not possible. Embracing a commitment to open teaching and learning practices in this way is known as open pedagogy or, sometimes, OER-enabled pedagogy.

While there are many definitions and understandings of open pedagogy, some common attributes include:

  • Learners produce resources for the commons
  • Learners are agents of their own learning
  • Learners are participants in the greater community of professionals

Open educational practices (OEPs) are the set of practices that accompany the adoption of open pedagogy. Some general examples of OEPs include:

  • Adapt, remix, or build OERs with students
  • Edit Wikipedia articles with students
  • Engage students in public conversations with experts & peers (annotation, social media)
