Transgender Day of Remembrance

Transgender Awareness Week and Day of Remembrance

November 13th-19th is Transgender Awareness Week

(Transgender Awareness Week | GLAAD, 2023)

Transgender Awareness Week runs Thursday, November 13 – Wednesday, November 19 and was designated to advocate for and educate about transgender people and the issues of prejudice, violence, and discrimination that members of the community face. It is directly followed by Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is November 20th, and it is a day to both remember and honor transgender individuals who have died unjustly due to transphobic violence, as well as recognize the strength and resilience of the transgender community.

The trans experience is not the same for everyone, even though mass media often portrays it that way. We hope that the resources in this guide will show that people can experience gender and identity in many different ways.

In the week leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance, here are some specific ways you can help us honor the transgender community:

  • Educate yourself by reading a book or watching a streaming film listed in this guide.

  • Attend a local event listed in the "Support the Trans Community" tab, above.

  • Check out our book display at Foley Library
