In-SPUR-ation: Celebrating 70 Years of Sisterhood with the Spurs and Setons: 1960-1969

Highlights of the 1960s:

  • Annually, the Spurs put on the Spur-Rise, an early morning dance.
  • Freshmen teas were given to acquaint freshmen women with the Spurs
  • The “Spur” of the month award was given to the Spur member who had been most active during that month
  • In May 1960, the 25 new Spurs were tapped at 4:30 a.m.  After the ceremony the old and new members attended a Mass in the student chapel.  After breakfast, a skit entitled:  “An Average Day in the Average Life of an Average Spur in the Average School” was presented.
  • Planned a window washing spree after Christmas vacation clearing Christmas decorations off windows at 50c a window Dec. 1964
  • The Knights awarded the first “SPUR of the year” in Feb. 1965 to Karen Maloney for her “girl next door” characteristics and for her work as a Spur.
  • In April 1967 the new Spurs wore  dime-store spurs, cowboy hats, and sheriff’s badges for a week.  They were required to obtain the signatures of all old and new Spurs and Knights. They also had to pass a test on the constitution and the by-laws, undergo initiation by the old Spurs at Manito Park, and provide entertainment for the next meeting.
