Conversations at the Desk

Libraries are inclusive spaces, however, they are also neutral spaces.

Please keep conversations at the desk (whether with co-workers or with patrons) professional and neutral. Do not talk about politics, religion, or any other divisive topics that could potentially alienate library patrons. For example:

Library Student Employee, "I can't believe so and so is going to vote for XYZ."

Patron overhears the conversation, and thinks, "The library is staffed by people who do not align politically with me so I must not be welcome in the library."

Because you are front-line library workers, patrons who enter the library will look to you to set the tone for the library. Please ensure that your conversations are professional, avoid divisive topics, and do your best to ensure that they cannot be overheard by patrons.
