Circulation Area
Service Desk Stations & Computers
The two computer stations are designated for each tier. Tier 1 (Circulation Student Assistants) should use the computer terminal facing the front doors. Tier 2 and above students should use the computer terminal facing the back windows.
Each computer will have pre-programmed tabs in the Chrome browser. Do not log into anything personal using Chrome. If you need to log into personal accounts, use Firefox, which is programmed to forget all history and logins once the browser is closed.
The third computer station is used for cash transactions for community patrons. The computer is for supervisor use only.
As of fall 2023, we are generally no longer using the Information Desk as a reference point. The exception is that the Late-Night Grad Leads may use that space during their shifts, as it provides the best view for building security during the late-night hours. We may also use it as a landing space for building partners (for example at the beginning of each semester, ITS will station a work study student to assist with printing questions). This is in preparation for our ultimate goal of moving toward a Learning Commons model, which we will discuss later.
Where to find supplies
You can find backup supplies in the supply cupboard, near Molly’s desk. Backup supplies include extra staples, tape, highlighters, markers, tissues, and more.
If you are not finding what you need behind Molly's Desk, there is a storage closet near the ILL area, which has additional supplies including cleaning supplies, tissues, and colored printer paper/cardstock. If you need any of these supplies, you can ask a supervisor to unlock this storage closet for you.
There is also a closet hallway in the Library Admin department where you can locate extra office supplies. You will see the supply area of Library Admin during your building tour.
If you notice that supplies are running low in any of the areas, please notify a supervisor so we can order more.
Your Supervisors
No matter when you are working at the library, you will always have a graduate student lead or full-time professional staff member as a supervisor during your shift. The people listed below are full-time staff who are your supervisors.
If you work days (Mon-Fri), your supervisor on duty may be Hannah Engel, the Daytime User Services Specialist. Hannah's work station is at the "floater supervisor desk" (desk to the left of the Circulation Desk). In addition, Hannah has a workspace cubicle in suite 114.
If you are working during the afternoons or evenings (Sun - Thurs), your supervisor on duty may be Molly McFadden, the Evening User Services Specialist. Molly’s work station is the cubicle near the workroom door.
If you are working evenings and weekends (Wed - Sun), your supervisor on duty may be Amanda Ma, the Weekend User Services Specialist. Amanda's work station is at the "floater supervisor desk." In addition, Amanda has a workspace cubicle in suite 114.
If you are working the late-night shift (Sun - Thurs, 9 pm - 2 am), your supervisor is the Lead Grad Student on duty.
Additional supervisors who may be at the desk include the Interlibrary Loan Specialist Daniel Dolan-Derks and the Interlibrary Loan Lead Kaitlin Cushman. Both of their work stations are in suite 114, which you will be shown on your tour.
Laura Hutton manages the department and is your indirect supervisor.
Brad Matthies is the Associate Dean of Library Services, which includes our department. He is Laura’s direct supervisor and your indirect supervisor. An associate dean for library services is essentially a leader who helps the library run smoothly. They work closely with the main library head (the dean) to make sure everything is working well. This includes planning how the library will be used, making sure staff are doing their jobs, and helping students and faculty use the library effectively. They also work with other parts of the university to make sure the library is meeting everyone's needs. Additionally, they oversee outreach programs that promote the library's services and resources to the wider community. Finally, they are also responsible for managing their portion of the library's budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to support the library's mission.
