Now that you are graduating, you may be on the job hunt. Here are some things to keep in mind as you navigate your potential references.
When selecting a supervisor to ask for a reference, think about who you worked with the most, and who might be able to speak to your talents and abilities the best.
We love to support our student employees in their career goals, but please keep in mind that we are also very busy (and have multiple requests for references each semester). Please give us as much notice as possible when asking for references. This is especially important if you are asking for a letter of recommendation.
When asking for a letter of recommendation, as a professional courtesy, please ensure that you give at minimum two weeks' notice. However, the more notice you are able to give us, the better.
We will ask you to fill out a form that gives us permission to speak to your talents and the work that you did here at Foley Library. In that form, we also ask you to submit a resume for our reference. Here is an example of a helpful way for you to ask us to write a letter for you.
I am applying for a job as a receptionist at a children's hospital. They are looking for someone with the following skills: detailed-oriented, can manage a schedule, good interpersonal skills. I would appreciate it if you could mention how my work at Foley prepared me for this position.
