Foley Library User Services Training Guide

Reporting Theft or Crimes that Occur in the Building

The library is open to the public 73 1/2 hours per week. Even if we were not open to the public, we would still need to worry about theft and the possibility of other crimes occurring in the building. By far, the most common crime that occurs in the building is theft.

What Does it Sound Like When a Patron is the Victim of a Theft?

Sometimes it will not be apparent that a patron has dealt with theft in the building. Here are some examples of what you might hear at the desk and how to respond.

Patron: Can I borrow a laptop? Mine was just stolen.

Library Worker: I'm sorry to hear that. Did the theft occur in the building and do you need any help contacting Campus Security to report it?

It might also sound like this:

Patron: Did anyone turn in a laptop?

Library Worker (After Checking): If you don't find it, come back to the desk and I will help you report it to Campus Security.

If a patron does report a theft in the building, please follow these steps:

1.    Take down the name and contact information of the person reporting the theft.
2.    Call Campus Security.
3.    Report the issue to the supervisor or Lead Grad on duty (supervisors and leads will also add this to their shift reports).
4.    File an incident report (incident reports are saved on every Chrome browser tab at all service desk computers).

Other Crimes that Occur in the Building

Any other crimes that occur in the building must be reported to Campus Security and a supervisor.

Crimes involving physical or sexual assault or harassment must immediately be reported to Campus Security, your supervisors, and sometimes 9-1-1. If you are unable to reach a supervisor, contact Campus Security and fill out an Incident Report Form.
