Foley Library User Services Training Guide

Managing Library Anxiety

Elements of library anxiety:
•    Fear of library space: patrons find the space itself overwhelming and/or confusing
•    Fear of library processes: patrons experience negative emotions when finding and checking out materials, as well as when using library resources
o    Students especially may feel like their library skills are inadequate, yet that they are unable to ask for help because they should already know how to do something. This is a myth; asking for help is not weakness.
o    However, asking for help can be stressful because you are in a vulnerable position
Even though they may be reluctant to approach you, students need help.

How to address library anxiety:
•    Be warm and welcoming
•    Listen to the patron, both to what they say and what their body language say
•    Express gratitude for their use of library and reference services
