Security Procedures
Gonzaga University and Foley Library believe in a behavior-based approach to reporting issues to Campus Security. This method helps avoid things like implicit bias and racial profiling in reporting issues.
As part of your onboarding training, you will be trained on behavior-based reporting when contacting Campus Security. The following information is in complement to that training, but is by no means the complete training.
Calling Campus Security
All student employees are empowered to call 9-1-1 and/or Campus Security at their discretion. If you ever need to call Campus Security, you can do so from any wired library phone by dialing x 2222. You can also program their number into your mobile phone by adding 509-313-2222.
If you are in a situation where you are concerned about being overheard while calling Campus Security, you can dial the number on the circ desk phone and set the phone handset down on the circulation desk. The Campus Security dispatcher will be able to listen in to what is happening and to see the situation through the security camera, and will dispatch a response.
Calling 9-1-1
If you ever need to call 9-1-1, note that we have a specific address so that emergency responders can find us. That address is 621 E. Cataldo Ave. You will be quizzed on this address, so commit it to memory.
Campus Escorts
Especially during the late-night hours, Campus Security provides escorts to homes (on or near campus) or vehicles for student employees and/or student library patrons. Please note that this is subject to availability of the officers at the time of the call.
If you are working at the desk and a patron requests an escort from Campus Security, please give them a call on behalf of the patron. Know that you will be expected to provide the student's name and pick up location to Campus Security dispatch.
Fire Exits
There are fire exits on both sides of all floors, and one extra one in the middle of the second floor (near the Academic Testing Center). Pay attention to your nearest fire exit when you are walking around the building, as sometimes that is your nearest exit. The front stairwell and front doors of Foley Library are also considered a fire exit.
Fire Extinguishers
There are 21 total fire extinguishers in Foley Library, including 7 on the main floor of Foley. As you are getting acquainted with the building, please keep an eye out for the nearest fire extinguishers on all floors.
Active Shooter Response Information
We hope that nothing ever happens to require this, but in the event of an active shooter or otherwise dangerous patron, we want you to know that you can pull the Circ workroom door closed behind you and shut off the lights (located near the door). If Laura’s door is open, you can also go into her office and pull the door closed. The handles of both doors are locked at all times, so when you close them behind you, the dangerous patron will not be able to follow you.
Evacuating the Building
In the event of a fire drill, please evacuate the building. You are not responsible for sweeping the floors to clear them of patrons-- that is the job of first responders. Please evacuate to the northeast side of Foley Field (corner near the Hemmingson entrance). Make sure you check in with your supervisor so that we can account for you.
Sheltering in Place
In the event of a ZagAlert instructing you to shelter in place during one of your shifts, please go to the lowest and most central point of the building (lower level of Foley Library).
