Patron Etiquette

Patron Etiquette

If someone approaches the desk looking for a particular staff member, call ahead and ask if they are ready to meet with the patron. If the answer is yes, ask if they would like to meet the patron or if you should escort the patron to their location.

“Hi, this is Helen at Circulation. Tony is here for your 3:30 appointment, would you like to meet them or did you want me to escort them to your office?”

We know it can get busy at the desk and this is not always possible. However, if and when possible, it is best practice to escort the patron toward their destination. For example, if someone has a meeting with a librarian and they do not know where the librarian office suite is located, you can escort them toward the office area and point the way as soon as you are close enough. Likewise, if someone is looking for Academic Advising and Assistance, escort them around the curved wall and point the rest of the way.
